Getting to the Source of your Anger

Anger is part of our common experience yet it is unique to each individual. For some, it can be difficult to predict and in some cases difficult to control. For others, it comes and goes without too much of a problem managing it.

Generally, anger gets triggered as a result of your own personal reaction to an event, a stressful circumstance, or someone's behaviour. It can also result from physical factors like fatigue or discomfort, leading to low tolerance for frustration.

Once anger presents itself, it is up to you to decide what to do with it, how to express it, and how best to deal with it. In some instances, you may not be able to think before reacting, and the result will be a loss of control.

Getting to the source of your anger is key if you are going to learn to manage it. Finding the source includes understanding why you get angry under certain conditions or experiences. The reason why certain events, or the behaviour of others, can trigger anger in you is an important and complex question to explore. Where one person may not react much to a particular experience, you may have a strong and disproportionate response - leading to loss of control.

Counselling and Psychotherapy can assist you in that discovery. Factors to explore can include the modeling of your parents and significant others, early life and childhood experiences, deep set beliefs about the world and your place in it, and/or low tolerance for stress, frustration or change.
