How can I stop Obsessive Thoughts - can Counselling help?

What are Obsessive Thoughts?

Our minds are powerful yet delicate instruments, capable of an infinite amount of actions, calculations, and conclusions within short time frame - even milliseconds. This speed and accuracy and power of thought can be quite useful when we are undertaking complex tasks like driving a car, or taking a test, or leading a meeting.

But, when we are resting or trying to sleep, or just doing mundane tasks: having our mind in 'high gear' with its engine revving can be distracting, disconcerting - or even frightening.

Obsessive thoughts are much like the engine of our mind operating in 'high gear' - but at time when that level of attention is not needed. Also, obsessive thoughts are very difficult to control or slow down and can feel almost impossible to stop altogether.

Where do Obsessive Thoughts come from?

Most often, these thoughts are not helpful or constructive, and are mostly based on fear, anxiety, or on something that doesn't always correspond with reality. They are thoughts that are born out of overthinking circumstances, imagining negative outcomes, and an attempt to control uncomfortable emotions.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive thoughts can develop further and lead to loss of sleep, mental preoccupation, and impacts on normal daily life. These impacts are found in those who suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, a condition of personality characterized by excessive orderliness, perfectionism, attention to detail, and a need for control in relating to others.

Help is Available for Obsessive Thoughts
